The Uganda Police Force has reminded members of the public that Saturday, 29 August 2026, will be observed as National Cleaning Day, calling on Ugandans across the country to actively participate in cleaning their homes, neighbourhoods, workplaces and public spaces.
The exercise is intended to promote cleaner, healthier and safer communities, with the Police urging the public to treat the day as a collective responsibility.
To facilitate the nationwide cleaning exercise, the Police has announced restrictions on the movement of vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and vessels from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. across the country.
During this three-hour period, members of the public are encouraged to remain within their respective localities and take part in the cleaning activities. Normal movement is expected to resume after 10:00 a.m.
The restrictions, however, will not apply to certain categories of people and vehicles, as well as genuine emergencies.
According to the Police, the following will be permitted to travel during the restricted period:
- Patients and people travelling for scheduled medical treatment, provided they have relevant medical documentation.
- Emergency service vehicles responding to emergencies.
- Medical personnel on duty with valid identification.
- Security personnel performing official duties.
- Private security personnel who are on duty.
- Cross-border vehicular traffic using designated major transport corridors.
- People travelling abroad, provided they have proof of travel.
- Foreign tourists travelling within the country.
- Journalists on official duty.
The Police has urged those falling under the exempted categories to carry the necessary identification or documentation to facilitate smooth movement and verification.
The Police has also called upon the public to cooperate with security personnel deployed to enforce the movement restrictions and to avoid confrontations or altercations.
Members of the public seeking guidance or clarification have been advised to contact the nearest police officer or supervisor on duty.
The Police emphasized that National Cleaning Day is an opportunity for communities to work together in improving sanitation and maintaining clean public spaces.
Ugandans are therefore encouraged to participate actively and contribute to cleaner, safer and healthier communities across the country.
