Severe flooding has hit parts of southern China’s Guangxi region after torrential rain linked to Typhoon Narra forced tens of thousands of residents from their homes.
Drone footage from Chongzuo on Monday showed roads, buildings, trees and vehicles partially submerged, while rescue teams used rubber boats to navigate flooded streets and assist affected residents.
Authorities said around 54,000 people have been relocated across Guangxi, including more than 8,000 residents moved into emergency shelters.
The Guangxi Hydrology Centre issued a red flood warning on August 23 and maintained the alert the following day. River levels have risen sharply, with some waterways increasing by as much as 11 metres. At least 19 monitoring stations across 13 rivers recorded water levels above warning thresholds.
China has activated a Level-IV emergency response for flooding and typhoon threats in Guangxi, Guangdong and Hainan, with rescue teams and relief supplies deployed to vulnerable areas.
Typhoon Narra, identified as the 19th typhoon of China’s 2026 season, has remained over the Beibu Gulf, bringing intense rainfall to southern China.
Authorities are warning of more heavy rain through Wednesday, raising concerns about further flooding and potential landslides in affected areas.
Emergency teams remain on standby as officials monitor river levels and continue evacuation, rescue and relief operations.
