The VIGA Music Awards have honoured the late Ssekabaka Muteesa I, the Kabaka of Buganda who reigned from 1856 to 1884, with a Special Gospel Icon Award in recognition of his historic contribution to the introduction and growth of Christianity in Buganda.

On 14 April 1875, Ssekabaka Muteesa I made a significant decision to invite Christian missionaries to Buganda. The decision marked an important chapter in Uganda’s religious history and contributed to the establishment and growth of Christian ministry in the Kingdom.
Decades later, the influence of that historic moment continues to be reflected in Uganda’s vibrant Christian and gospel music landscape one that the VIGA Music Awards seek to celebrate and promote.

As part of the recognition, the VIGA team had the opportunity to present the Special Gospel Icon Award in the heart of the Buganda Kingdom at Bulange.

The delegation was led by Prince Nick, CEO of the VIGA Music Awards, in a special tribute honouring Ssekabaka Muteesa I and acknowledging the historical foundations that helped shape Uganda’s gospel ministry and music industry.
