President Paul Kagame has directed Rwanda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to work with relevant institutions in other countries to provide assistance to Rwandan nationals reportedly detained in Madagascar over alleged human-trafficking offences.
Speaking during a press conference on Monday, Kagame said Rwanda should continue engaging other countries while maintaining an independent approach to its national interests.
The President also defended Rwanda’s visa-free policy for Africans, saying countries should be free to adopt policies they believe can benefit their citizens and strengthen regional integration.
Kagame stressed that Rwanda makes decisions based on its own interests while remaining open to working with other countries.
He argued that greater movement of people across African borders could create opportunities for trade, tourism and stronger cooperation among African nations.
On the regional security situation, Kagame reiterated Rwanda’s position that the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) remains a major security concern.
He questioned why the issue could not be addressed directly rather than allowing it to continue being used as part of the wider regional security debate.
Reflecting on Rwanda’s development, Kagame attributed much of the country’s progress to the resilience and unity of its people.
He said Rwandans have continued to work together and remain determined even during periods of serious challenges.
Kagame’s remarks touched on regional security, African integration, national sovereignty and Rwanda’s development, highlighting his administration’s continued emphasis on self-reliance while maintaining engagement with other countries.
